Fights may loom after Denver Mayor Mike Johnston accepts a fraction of City Council’s budget additions

The Denver City Council went big when it asked new Mayor Mike Johnston to add more money to next year’s city budget for emergency rental assistance, cash payments for people who are homeless, support for Denver Health and other requests.Johnston has responded by accepting $10.6 million in spending additions — just an eighth of the more than $81 million the body asked for to meet its 2024 priorities in a significant increase from past years. He granted several requests only partially.Multimillion-dollar gaps remain between the council and the mayor as they work to pass a 2024 budget by Nov. 13. The process is giving new officeholders on both sides a lesson in the power dynamics of Denver city government, which favors the mayor on budget matters but gives the council some levers to pull.In coming weeks, the council could attempt to amend the budget to incorporate more of its priorities, while the mayor could veto those changes — at the risk of being overridden, if th...

Lauren Boebert, far behind leading challenger in fundraising, feels squeeze from both sides in 2024 election

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert is getting squeezed from both sides of the political aisle in the money race as she faces a growing field of challengers hoping to thwart her reelection next year.Third-quarter fundraising totals reported in recent days in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District show the Republican incumbent was outraised by her most prominent Democratic foe, Adam Frisch, by a factor of 4-to-1. And Jeff Hurd, a Boebert challenger in next year’s GOP primary, posted sizeable totals indicating he also might pose trouble for the two-term congresswoman.Boebert’s haul for the period from July 1 to Sept. 30 was just shy of $854,000, according to the recent campaign finance reports. Earlier this month, ahead of filing his full quarterly report, former Aspen city councilman Frisch, who narrowly lost to Boebert in 2022, touted a nearly $3.4 million haul during the same time frame.Hurd, a Grand Junction attorney, collected just over $412,000 despite launching his campai...

Goldberg: In Gaza, piling horror upon horror, atrocities upon atrocities

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:58:40 GMT

Watching from afar as people race toward an abyss, I find it hard to know what to write except “no,” over and over. In the face of massacres that for Jews around the world brought back memories of genocide, the language of some Israeli leaders has, in turn, become murderous. On the cusp of a likely ground invasion of Gaza, many people I’ve spoken to, Jewish and Palestinian alike, are terrified that this rhetoric will become reality.Isaac Herzog, Israel’s president, said that the “entire nation” of Gaza was “responsible” for the attacks at a news conference on Friday, telling reporters, “It is not true, this rhetoric about civilians not being aware, not involved.” Herzog later clarified that civilians are not legitimate targets, but his words, coming from a member of Israel’s center-left Labor Party, were still chilling, suggesting a broad political consensus that Gazans are collectively to blame for the horror that befell Israel. “All gloves are off,” Ron Prosor, a distinguished Isr...
