Dying younger. Living harder. Going broke. It is difficult to overstate the longitudinal effects of excess weight in America. An estimated seven in 10 Americans are overweight or obese. The combination, according to the National Institutes of Health, results in an estimated 300,000 preventable deaths per year with extreme obesity lowering life expectancy by 14 years on average.Added weight not only makes everyday life more difficult, but it also produces serious health consequences that include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and cancer. In total, obesity costs an estimated $260 billion annually in inpatient and outpatient care.Whether weight gain is caused primarily by genetics, societal influences or individual will, scientists aren’t altogether sure. What’s clear, however, is that most efforts to lose weight ultimately fail.Ozempic, one of a new class of medications, has been shown in studies to spur significant weight loss. SANTA CLARA – One-on-one combat between Trent Williams and Nick Bosa is typically the marquee attraction among linemen drills at 49ers training camp. This camp’s undercard is worth following, however. Williams’ fellow offensive linemen, after all, must be able to ensure the ever-precarious health of the 49ers’ quarterbacks. At right tackle, Colton McKivitz enters as the already appointed successor to Mike McGlinchey, who left in free agency for Denver (after a five-year term featuring great praise for run blocking and heaping criticism for pass-protection lapses). On the interior, guards Aaron Banks and Spencer Burford will flank center Jake Brendel for a second straight year, which bodes well for their chemistry. So, since the starters are all set, time to look elsewhere, right? Not so fast.Assuming all five first-string linemen – Williams, Banks, Brendel, Burford, McKivitz – make it through a season as 17-game starters is a stretch. Reserves must be schooled up to maintain the consist...Five-bedroom home in San Ramon sells for $2.7 million

Steve Kerr doesn’t have much time to rest.He has just a few days with family in Southern California before training begins for Team USA Basketball when August begins. The Warriors’ head coach will reprise his role leading the national team for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, with warm-up games in Las Vegas, Spain and the United Arab Emirates before next month’s tournament in the Philippines. But Kerr paused for a few minutes this week to debrief the Warriors’ busy offseason so far.On Dunleavy’s offseason movesKerr noted that he had been in constant communication with Mike Dunleavy Jr. when it became apparent former general manager Bob Myers was likely to leave his post once his contract ran out and Dunleavy was his likely successor. They got on the same page throughout the season about how the roster needed to change to keep the championship contention window open.“It’s seamless, really, given that he’s been here the last five years,” Ke...Opinion: California foster youth suffer as state shortchanges agencies

California’s foster children are too often being warehoused in hotels, office spaces and former juvenile halls rather than receiving intensive services to heal their trauma.Christine Stoner-Mertz is CEO of the California Alliance of Child and Family Services. (Photo courtesy of Christine Stoner-Mertz.)The state is failing the children who need us most because it has failed to invest at every level of the system supporting them. The state budget just adopted offers a thin lifeline to essential programs for youth yet misses crucial opportunities to fix devastating gaps in our system for the most vulnerable young people. From the viewpoint of the nonprofit programs that help children heal and reunite families, a total collapse is on the horizon without a surge in funding, and better coordination among public and private sectors to meet the growing needs of vulnerable children.First, helping them starts with prevention. Family resource centers, embedded in communities and with the t...Fifty years after Bruce Lee’s death, this man keeps his promise
