Missouri upsets No. 15 Kansas State, 30-27, on 61-yd game-winning field goal

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Eli Drinkwitz and the Missouri coaching staff decided in the closing seconds of a back-and-forth affair with Kansas State on Saturday that if the Tigers crossed midfield and reached the 40-yard line, they would give Harrison Mevis a chance to kick the winning field goal.Missouri made it to the Kansas State 38 and quarterback Brady Cook spiked the ball to stop the clock. Then that same coaching staff inexplicably lost track of time on the sideline, and the delay-of-game penalty pushed the field-goal attempt back 5 yards. What would have been a 56-yarder became a 61-yard long shot from the wrong side of midfield. It didn't matter. After Cook threw incomplete trying to recoup the yardage, Mevis trotted onto the field anyway. And with the final few seconds ticking away, he boomed the SEC-record 61-yarder over the crossbar, sending the Tigers to a field-storming, come-from-behind 30-27 victory over the No. 15 Wildcats in a showdown of former Big 12 rivals.“We took the p...

Oakland A’s lose third straight to match last season’s 102-loss total

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:18:28 GMT

The youthful A’s lost their third straight game on Saturday afternoon and tied last season’s mark with their 102nd loss, falling 5-2 to the San Diego Padres. And while this year’s team still seems likely to end up with the most losses in the franchise’s Oakland history (the current record is 108 losses in 1979), the youth movement continues to build some small hope that things could be different in 2024.Rookie sensation Zack Gelof hit his 12th homer of the season on Saturday, launching a solo shot in the sixth off of Padres starter Matt Waldron, who earned his first career win — and a noteworthy one within the sport, too.Waldron, 26, primarily pitches a knuckleball and earned the win by only allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings. He became the first pitcher to use a knuckleball while earning a win in nearly five years (the last knuckleballer to get a win was Steven Wright on Sept. 20, 2018).Waldron’s knuckler wasn’t untouchable, as the A’s batters picked up seven hits off of him. Baker left the field between the top and bottom of the inning to receive further treatment.“You hate seeing an umpire get hurt like that,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “Jordan took a beating today.”The game was delayed after eight innings while second base umpire Brennan Miller changed into his gear to work the plate. The game continued with three umpires.A Blue Jays spokesperson said Baker’s status for Sunday’s series finale was unknown.
