Quiz: AI images vs. history’s most iconic photos — can you tell the difference?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:19:33 GMT

We’re on our way into a future where it’s no longer possible to tell what’s real and what’s fake. Earlier this year, an image of Pope Francis decked out in a white Balenciaga puffer jacket sent the internet into a spin. As did fictional images depicting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrest. Both were created using a new era of AI generators, like Midjourney, DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion, which are unleashing a flood of rapidly created fake images into the world.Where seeing was once believing, soon anybody will be able to generate photo-realistic imitations with a click of a button. We took some of history’s most iconic images and, in a matter of seconds, created new versions of them. Are you able to tell which is which? Take our quiz and see for yourself. Then read POLITICO’s story on what happens when we can no longer believe our eyes.Which is the real image of the fall of the Berlin wall? Which image is the real image of the atomic bomb d...

The longer Israel thinks, the more time Washington has to calm its wrath

Jamie Dettmer is opinion editor at POLITICO Europe. BEIRUT — “Once you break it, you are going to own it,” General Colin Powell warned former United States President George W. Bush when he was considering invading Iraq in the wake of 9/11.And as the invasion plan came together, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld blocked any serious postwar planning for how Iraq would be run once the country’s ruler Saddam Hussein had gone. As far as he was concerned, once “shock and awe” had smashed Iraq, others could pick up the pieces.British generals fumed at this. And General Mike Jackson, head of the British army during the invasion, later described Rumsfeld’s approach as “intellectually bankrupt.”That history is now worth recalling — and was likely on U.S. President Joe Biden’s mind when he urged the Israeli war cabinet last week not to “repeat mistakes” made by the U.S. after 9/11.Despite Biden’s prompt, however, Israel still doesn’t appear to have a definitive plan for what to do wi...

Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson gets two interceptions to break 28-game streak without one: ‘I deserve to be paid’

Jaylon Johnson jumped in front of Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams to grab the interception, raced 39 yards for a touchdown and then made a beeline for the FOX broadcast camera. As Johnson’s teammates gathered around to celebrate his second career interception — and his first of two picks Sunday — Johnson smirked at the camera and swiped one hand up over the other, raining imaginary money over the Soldier Field end zone. Was he sending a message with that celebration in the Bears’ joy-filled 30-12 victory over the Raiders, you ask?“You damn right,” Johnson said. “100%.”Johnson’s two interceptions — one off veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer and one off rookie Aidan O’Connell — were part of a banner day for the Bears defense against a Raiders team missing starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Tremaine Edmunds also intercepted Hoyer. The Bears let the Raiders in the end zone just once, held them to 39 yards rushing and...

ST. LOUIS – As the war between Israel and Hamas rages on, St. Louisans again showed their support for the Jewish community on Sunday.Dozens of people gathered near Forest Park to hold a solidarity rally and silent prayer to pay tribute to the innocent people who have lost their lives. The group drew looks and honks along Skinker Boulevard as people of Christian, Jewish, and other faiths stood in solidarity.Karen Sher, vice president of community impact for the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, said it’s bigger than supporting Israel.“This is not just about the Jewish community. This is about humanity,” Sher said.Other demonstrators agreed.“This is not a protest against Palestinians,” Tami Flick said. “We love Palestinians. We pray for Jews, Palestinians. CLAYTON, Mo. – In a stunning move, the St. Louis County Council has deadlocked on funding for the area’s transit operator, the Bi-State Development Agency. The agency had requested $128.5 million in funding to run Metro bus, light rail, and other transportation services. The vote was 3-3 and split along party lines, with Democrats voting in favor and Republicans opposed to the measure.“Well, it was quite a surprise to me. To be honest with you, I did not know that there was some problems with the budget or that some of the members had some challenges with the budgets. I didn’t know that. So, when it failed on a 3-3 vote, I was very surprised,” Councilwoman Rita Heard Days said. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Kiszla: Aww, the Denver Broncos are so bad they even win a must-lose game to Green Bay

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:19:33 GMT

Yippee! America’s most dysfunctional family this side of the Simpsons managed to win a must-lose NFL game.Aww, the Denver Broncos. They can’t even tank correctly.Say goodbye to the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft and any real shot of landing USC quarterback Caleb Williams. On this Sunday, cruddy, Sunday, the Broncos blew a 13-point lead in the second half, then rallied to beat Green Bay 19-17.Despite trying his best to become the first coach in the 64-year history of the franchise to start his career 0-4 at home, Sean Payton’s team prevailed in the end. Not that it made him happy.“I was a little happier before I came in here,” Payton told the assembled media wretches during his postgame news conference.Funny you should mention that, Coach. The mood in any room is usually a lot brighter before Payton enters, dragging that doom-and-gloom cloud on a leash behind him.For Broncomaniacs old enough to remember the 1970s, when the streak of selling out home games in Denver began and Quaker Oats ...

Keeler: Broncos Country says “no tanks” to tanking for Caleb Williams after 19-17 win over Green Bay: “It’s almost offensive to me as a fan of the Broncos”

Every seventh head in Section 501 looked as if it belonged in a mousetrap, not a mile high. Jeremy Marty waved an Orange & Blue arm at the invasion of Cheeseheads below us Sunday at Empower Field and shook his head.“I don’t want to tank,” Marty, a Broncos lifer here from Nashville, told me during the third quarter of Denver 19, Green Bay 17, Aesthetics 0. “I believed in this team at the beginning of the year. And my blood runs deep for the Broncos.“So to go and even think for a second that they would go and tank at all is almost offensive to me as a fan of the Broncos — even as much as what we’re seeing with these yellow-and-green jerseys. Actually, it pains me to see this. So I would say absolutely not.”Denver celebrated Week 7 by moving to 2-0 vs. the NFC North and 0-5 vs. everybody else. The eye test tells us the Packers and Bears aren’t in the same weight class as the Eagles and Dolphins, let alone the same zip code. But a gift...
